October Is Sports Day Season in Japan
October 10 is Sports Day (Taiiku no Hi / 体育の日) in Japan — a national holiday that celebrates sports and health.
Many kindergartens and nursery schools hold their Undokai (Sports Day) in October.
Some elementary schools also have their Undokai during this month.
For example, my child’s school will hold its Sports Day at the end of October.
It’s the perfect season — not too hot and not too cold — for children to enjoy outdoor activities.
What is “Undokai”?
In Japan, many schools and kindergartens hold a Sports Day, called “Undokai (うんどうかい)”.
It is usually held once a year — often in spring (May–June) or autumn (September–October).
Children show what they have practiced, such as running races, dances, and group games.
It is a big day for both children and parents!
Common Events
Each school is different, but you may see these events:
- 🏃 Running races (kyoso / 競走)
