Need Help with School Costs? How to Apply for School Expense Support: Fukuoka City Example

If you are raising children in Japan and facing money problems, there is a system that can help you pay for school expenses in elementary and junior high school. (Public school only)

This system is called Shugaku Enjo Seido (就学援助制度), or the School Expense Assistance Program.

💡 What Kind of School Costs Can Be Supported?

You may receive financial help for:

  • School trip fees (shugaku ryoko)
  • School supplies such as notebooks, pens, and other items
  • School lunch fees (kyushoku)
  • Buying a school bag (randoseru) and other learning items

This support helps families so that children can go to school without worrying too much about money.

👪 Who Can Get This Support?

You may be eligible if your family:

  • Is receiving public assistance (seikatsu hogo)
  • Has financial difficulty sending children to school
  • Is recognized by the city or ward (local government) as needing help
  • Is a single-parent household

Even if you are not receiving public assistance, you might still qualify, depending on your family income.
